Rice is the staple food not only for Filipinos but for over half the world’s population. Filipinos are “rice eater” many said they cannot be satisfied without rice in a meal.
We all know that there were shortages of rice in the previous year that the government need to buy from other countries to supply the demands because of projected low harvest that are being blamed for pestilence and climate change.
Though this years climate are not good and some places were flooded and damage our agriculture but according to President Benigno Aquino III the Philippines will no longer be nearing rice imports as it is already nearing a self sufficiency stage. “Our agriculture minister has made a guarantee that there will be no need to import rice. It was not a radical change, but what we did was that we did what was only necessary. Ours is a very basic step,” he said in a panel discussion with chief executive officers of top companies.
Yes, it is a good news but I don’t believe in this until the time that the rice is affordable. Isn’t it ironic? As you can observe, yes we are one of the countries that rich in the agriculture industry but the goods that we have here and originate here is still expensive, a good example of this is our beloved rice. Many Filipino people complain and not satisfied to the rice they eat because it is so expensive and some of the people can’t afford it. And we know that it is a basic need of a person particularly we Filipinos because we are born rice eaters.
In my part, it doesn’t mean that I don’t believe in our government, I just don’t want to expect things like what happened to our economy nowadays, our economy dropped. Philippines growth slows down to 3.2%, which everyone didn’t expect to happen. I just want to be sure that this is true and will happen without expecting too much for I don’t want to be upset in the future.
